Abstract

This study aimed to examine the digital material design competency levels of social studies teachers and to determine whether these competencies differ according to various variables. A cross-sectional survey model, one of the quantitative research designs, was employed in the study. A total of 266 social studies teachers working in middle schools across seven different geographical regions of Türkiye participated in the research. The research data were collected using the "Digital Material Design Competencies Scale" developed by Göçen Kabaran and Uşun in 2021. Since the obtained data did not exhibit a normal distribution, non-parametric tests—specifically the Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis test—were used in the analysis of the quantitative data, alongside descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that the digital material design competency levels of social studies teachers were generally "very high" (X̄=4.80) While no significant differences were found in the teachers' competency levels based on gender and age variables, a significant difference was observed regarding the region of employment, specifically between the Black Sea and Marmara regions in favor of the Black Sea Region. The study also offers educational implications, highlighting that technological infrastructure wealth alone may not be sufficient to enhance material design competency, and emphasizing the roles of teachers' personal interests and administrative incentives.
